The Covid19 pandemic has forced to shape our education differently in a short span of 3 months since January 2020. The traditional face to face learning space has evolved into virtual learning. Many adult learners, children, and even enrichment centres are using platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and NearPods to keep education moving. Most of the industries except for essential services are severely affected. The global economy came to a standstill forcing some business entrepreneurs to wind down. Singapore is fortunate to receive financial support from the government during this challenging period while putting up Covid19 measures to ensure the nation is safe and keeping the contacted rates low.

Mr. Lee Hsien Loong’s May Rally 2020 highlighted that “Companies will have to change their business models to survive. Some jobs will simply disappear. Workers in these industries will have to reskill themselves, to take up jobs in new sectors. But there will also be new opportunities and new jobs created too.”

The government had planned to scale up SkillsFuture programmes to train workers on a large scale. This is the time now to start picking up new training, skilled up the competencies, and develop capabilities so that we can continuously look for opportunities. It is essential to understand the current expectation of the workforce from employers. Many employers are now looking at multi-talent candidates to be able to perform more than one task. The candidate’s market value increases as you can accomplish more tasks and yet able to deliver good work. It has been increasingly competitive over the years for candidates to look for a job; and even for employers to hunt for the right candidates.
